The tradition dates back centuries to the town’s days as a busy trading port, when merchants hung lanterns for good fortune. The monthly Lantern Festival
On the 14th day of each lunar month (the full moon), Hoi An holds its Lantern Festival. Electric lights are dimmed, motorbikes are kept out of the centre, and the town is lit almost entirely by lanterns and candles. The Night Market
Across the river on Nguyen Hoang Street, the night market is full of lantern stalls, souvenirs, handicrafts and street food. It’s a great place for photos, gifts and a cheap dinner on a stick.
Floating lanterns on the river
Take a short boat ride on the Thu Bon River and release a paper lantern onto the water — a lovely Hoi An tradition. Boats are cheap and negotiated by the riverbank.
